Class Descriptions

Dozens of UU curricula are designed for children of various ages, but unlike many religions, Unitarian Universalism does not have a standard curriculum for religious education. The ongoing challenge is to find the best curricula to meet the needs of our UUF kids. For the 2005-06 year, we have put together a rich and exciting RE program for all our UUF children.

Childcare (Infants and Toddlers)

Every Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a safe, warm environment is provided for infants and toddlers through age three. Age appropriate toys and activities are available. The Childcare program is staffed by a trained adult assisted by adolescent volunteers.

Pre-K: We Celebrate Our World

The pre-kindergarten-aged children are learning about our UU principles, the wonders of life, themselves as unique human beings, and holidays of various religions. Their curriculum has been drawn from various curricula including “Chalice Children”, “Celebrating Me & My World” and “We Are Many - We Are One.” Sample lessons include:  “The Moon is Important,”  “Wondrous Trees” and “Being Kind Makes the World a Nicer Place.”

Grades K-2: Superheroes of the Bible and UU Superheroes

Children in kindergarten through second grade are participating in two values-based UU identity curricula: “UU Superheroes” and “Superheroes of the Bible.”  These lessons expand on the theme from the summer’s curriculum: “The Music of Heroes.”

The superhero curriculum introduces children to stories of UU people and biblical people who have acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to live their lives fully and make the world a better place for others. Some of the superheroes include:

Henry David Thoreau                     David

Clara Burton                                   Moses

Christopher Reeve                         Solomon

Lydia Marie Child                            Joseph

P.T. Barnum                                  Esther

Grades 3-5: We Believe

Children in grades three through five are participating in the curriculum "We Believe: Learning and Living Our Unitarian Universalist Principles." These older elementary aged children are discovering our seven principles through various hands-on approaches designed to capitalize on different learning styles. “We Believe” includes songs, stories and activities. The “We Believe” teaching team is eager to guide our third, fourth and fifth graders to develop an understanding of the UU Principles while having fun!

Middle & High School: World Religions through Film

Sunday school for middle school and high school youths will combine the popular movie format with sessions that explore world religions. Youths will examine and explore Christianity, Islam, earth-centered religions, humanism and Judaism with films, speakers and field trips.
