YRUU? Young Religious Unitarian Universalists

Founded in 1981, Young Religious Unitarian Universalists, or YRUU, is an organization of Unitarian Universalist youth, aged 12-20 years. YRUU has groups throughout the United States and Canada and is a "Sponsored Organization" of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which is the national association of affiliated Unitarian Universalist congregations.

The purpose of YRUU is for youths under 21, to get together for fun, fellowship, community service and spiritual exploration. Our YRUU group is associated with other YRUU groups to provide a quality program locally in the Florida District and continent-wide. YRUU youths participate in conferences (CONs) about six times a year. These CONs are planned and hosted by YRUU in various churches and represent a valuable learning experience for all attendees.

UUF is proud of our YRUU youths. They are a dynamic group of individuals. Many excel in their schools, which include Howard Bishop Academy of Technology, Lincoln’s Lyceum, Eastside High School’s IB and Gainesville and Buchholz High Schools’ AP programs, as well as dual-enrollment. We strive to instill pride in academics as well as other accomplishments, such as sports, theatre and band. Our members have participated in various activities such as Scouts, varsity volleyball and soccer, marching, jazz and symphonic bands and theatre productions, while still being active in YRUU, both here in Gainesville and throughout the wider community.

We celebrate accomplishments and try to help with challenges, and our older members tend to mentor the younger, since they have recently had the same school and life experiences. Many times, the support youths receive in YRUU is just what they need to cope with stress. Our group spends a lot of time checking-in and listening to each other talk about their lives. School and home can be very stressful for youth, but YRUU is a safe place for them to explore who they are as individuals and in relation to others.

The youth group meets most Sundays from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
